Doonside Hawks Soccer Club was started back in 1981. The Club has grown from humble beginnings when our home ground was Charlie Bali Reserve (formally Kareela Reserve). The Club moved to Glendenning Reserve, doubling its size to 2 full fields and 3 mini fields.
Doonside Hawks Early History
The first get together to form a club was in October 1980.
The meeting was held at Doonside Community Centre and was attended by Brian Picket, Steve Lindsay, Fred Sammut, Margaret McColl, Brian Ross and John Xuereb as an adviser.
The discussion was around how they would get money together to start the Club.
A donation of $300 was made by the Sports and Recreation Club (which at the time included the Doonside Cricket and Athletics Clubs)
Next on the list was the Clubs colours and name. – maroon and white were chosen and the first name was Doonside Sports and Recreation Soccer Club.
The newly formed committee applied and registered to join the Blacktown Association.
The Inaugural Committee
President - Brian Ross
Vice President - Steve Lindsay
Secretary - Brian Picket
Competition Secretary - Fred Sammut
Treasurer - Margaret McColl
Other Committee members joined soon after.
The Home Ground was to be Kareela West Reserve (now known as Charlie Bali Reserve), however the ground would not be ready for the start of the 1981 season so home games were played at Mt Druit Sports Centre.
There was a lot of criticism about starting a soccer club at that time in Doonside as it was seen as a Rugby League dominated area. The committee pushed on regardless and held its first Registration Day on the first Saturday in February 1981 at the Doonside Shops on Hillend Rd.
By the end of February the Club had registered enough players to make 7 teams from U6 to U13. A huge surprise, remember in those days the U6 to U11 played full field with 11 players + reserves, not small sided like today so feathers were ruffled.
Playing Shirts were purchased by the club for the players and shorts were hand made by volunteers to save some money.
Brian Pickett sponsored the club and also found other sponsors including
Palmers Auto Electrical
EdRoy Mower Service
Phil McColl
